About Us

History

This Church began as a mission under the Joseph Campau Church of Christ, Detroit, Michigan in 1943.  The first services held in Pontiac, Michigan were at the homes of Brother and Sister John Thompson on Crawford Street and Brother and Sister Cris Fowler on ranch street.  During this time, Brother Robert Smith delivered the sermons and collections were $1.50 a week.

In 1945, segregation was the custom of the land.  Although there was a Church of Christ in Pontiac, it was considered a “white” church; Black members had designated areas to sit and pray.  In addition, baptisms had to be held at this church because black members did not have such a facility.  During 1945, the “white” Church of Christ helped raise $700.00 to establish a “black” Church of Christ.  A five-room house was purchased and this became the Ester Street Church of Christ.

As the Congregation grew, new facilities were needed.  Consequently, the Hughes Street property was purchased and the church became the Hughes Street Church of Christ in 1952.

The congregation still continued to grow.  Thus in 1967, Brothers Everett Carson, Felix Glazier, Samuel Glazier, and Elmo Rucks signed papers authorizing the selling of First Mortgage Church Building Funds Bonds in order to raise money to build a new church.  By going door-to-door and all over the Pontiac and Metro area, Brother Samuel Glazier was able to sell $115, 000 of these bonds.  A church was built and dedicated as the Franklin Road Church of Christ.

In 1975, Brothers Samuel Glazier and Elmo Rucks signed papers authorizing an additional issue of the First Mortgage Church Building Funds Bonds.  This was to enable the church to build a fellowship hall.  Once again, Brother Samuel Glazier was able to sell $110.000 of these bonds and the fellowship hall was built from the funds.

During the last fifty years, there have been three outstanding events which have affected the Franklin Road Church of Christ:

1. Christ Is Your Answer.  A TV ministry started by Bro. Leroy Medlock in May 1981 in collaboration with several churches of Christ in the Metropolitan area.

2. The 1991 Crusade for Christ.  A national crusade for all members of the Church of Christ, regardless of race, held at the Renaissance Center, Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan during July.  The theme of this event was “that we all may be one.”

3. The formal installation of Elders and Deacons.  On November 1, 1992, the following leadership was presented: Elders: Dexter Harney, and Willie R. Vaughn;      Deacons: Robert Ford, Sr., Karl Richardson, and Ronald Seay.
